GETTING STARTED: Useful information

  • Why are some movies only available to buy or rent?
Acetrax Movies has hundreds of great movies from a huge variety of genres. Movies are updated regularly and are available to rent or buy.  Not all movies have both rental and ownership options for digital distribution online which is why there is a mix of movies available for rent or purchase or both.
  • Why aren't all movies the same price?
Movie prices vary depending on their release date.
  • Why aren't all movies available in HD?

Where possible we have movies in HD, but you should always check before purchasing that your chosen HD movie is playable on the device you want to watch it on.  You can find this information alongside each movie synopsis.

  • How many times can I watch a film after I have rented or purchased?
You can watch rented movies as many times as you like for up to 24 hours (or in some cases 48 hours - depending on the movie) on up to 2 registered devices. You have 30 days to play rented movies before they expire.
  • Can I watch a preview before renting or purchasing a movie?

All movies can be previewed by clicking on the ‘trailer' option.  However, the trailer quality is not as good as the actual playback quality.

  • Can I watch a movie from Acetrax Movies on my TV, Blu-ray player, or tablet as well as my PC or laptop (including Mac) directly from the internet?

The Acetrax Movies service is available on a wide range of devices from many manufacturers allowing you to enjoy movies directly through your TV or Blu-ray player. You can also enjoy movies from Acetrax Movies on selected tablets or via your PC or laptop (including Macs).  Go to Acetrax Movies ready devices for details of compatible devices.

  • What Broadband download speed do I need?

We are passionate about movies and providing excellent picture quality with minimal bandwidth requirements for you to enjoy Acetrax Movies.  We recommend a download speed of at least 3Mbps to watch Standard Definition (SD) movies without interruptions and 5Mbps for High Definition (HD) movies..

Freezing or buffering may still happen when streaming over the internet for reasons such as pressure on your broadband network or having a number of other applications open on your PC or laptop at the same time (e.g. Outlook, Skype, virus scanners).  If you aren't sure what your download speed is, go to Speedtest.net to check.

  • What is the picture quality like?  What is the aspect ratio?

Our movies are in true 576p quality for Standard Definition (SD), which is the same as a DVD and looks great even on big-screen TVs, and 720p for those movies available in High Definition (HD).  The aspect ratio is typically 16:9 or occasionally 4:3.

For any issues with the quality of your picture or sound, go to our Help section for troubleshooting advice.

  • Can I download a movie?

If you're watching on a laptop or PC (not including Mac) movies are available to download directly from the Acetrax Movies website (go to ‘My Movies' and click on the download icon). If you're watching on selected tablets, you can download movies using the Acetrax Movies app.  We also recommend that you have at least 2GB of hard-disk drive free on your PC or laptop so you have sufficient space to store the movie.  Once downloaded you can play movies back using Windows Media Player, or other video software (The download option is not available for Macs, Smart TVs, or Blu-ray players, but instant streaming is available).

If you're having trouble downloading a movie, go to our Help section for troubleshooting advice.

  • I can't get the movie to play. What's wrong?

Movies you've rented or purchased are streamed directly to your chosen device: a Smart TV, Blu-ray player, tablet, PC or laptop.  If you're using your PC, laptop or tablet to rent or buy, you can also download a copy of your movie.  You need to have the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in installed to be able to stream movies on your PC or laptop (including Macs).

  • My total account balance shows enough to buy a movie, but I still can't. Why?
Your total balance shows the added value of any vouchers together with your own topped-up credit.  These can't both be used at the same time to make a purchase - payments can be made from either balance but not a combination of the two.  For example, it's not possible to buy a movie using some voucher credit and your topped-up credit together - you'll need to top up your account credit or use your remaining voucher credit to buy a movie of that value.
  • How do I change my payment information?
To easily manage and change your payment details, sign in to Acetrax Movies and visit My Account.
  • My picture keeps buffering or freezing when I'm watching it.  How can I fix it?

    There are lots of reasons that this can happen.  Some of the most common possible causes are below;

    1. Check the system requirements of your viewing device:
    • Smart TV or Blu-ray player: check that you have the latest software running on your device.  Check the website of your device manufacturer if you're not sure.
    • PC or laptop (including Macs): ensure that you are using the latest version of Microsoft Silverlight.  If not, go to Microsoft Silverlight to download the latest version.

    2. Check the quality of your internet connection.
If you're using a wireless connection, make sure you have a strong signal. Or try using a wired connection. Check that your router is operating normally - can you get online and browse the internet normally?  If the problem is with your router or modem, please contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

    3. Check your broadband download speed.
We recommend a download speed of at least 2.5Mbps  to watch Standard Definition (SD) movies and 5Mbps to watch High Definition (HD) movies.   You can check your broadband speed by at Speedtest.net.

The broadband speed on your viewing device can also be affected by:
    • other people using your internet connection (such as people online on other devices)
    •  other programmes open on your viewing device; or
    • your ISP's ‘traffic management' policy

    4. Try changing your firewall or virus protection settings.
Sometimes these types of programmes can prevent streaming of content.  Please refer to the supplier of your firewall and virus protection to find out how best to configure your protection programmes to allow streaming for Acetrax Movies.

    5. Try restarting the device.

    6. If  you've tried all this and you're still having problems, go to http://whatsmyip.org/ and or Contact Us with:
    - The date and time that you experienced your problem
    - Your IP Address
    - The title of the movie which is not playing properly
    - The Speedtest.net results
    - The device or devices you attempted to play the movie on

  • The picture quality doesn't look quite right/ the sound and picture are a little out. How do I fix this?
We are passionate about movies and providing the best combination of excellent picture quality and minimal bandwidth requirements for you to enjoy Acetrax Movies.  However, problems such as freezes or buffering may still happen when streaming over the internet for several reasons, such as pressure on your broadband network or the number of other applications open on your PC or laptop at the same time (e.g. Outlook, Skype, virus scanners). If you are not sure of your download speed, go to Speedtest.net to check.

If you do experience other problems with the quality of the picture or lip sync (i.e. a delay between picture and sound), Contact Us with the details of the movie and we'll look into it.

  • I can't get the movie to start playing at all.  How do I fix this?

If you find that the movie starts but buffers or freezes and stops, you can try our troubleshooting steps for 'buffering' issues. If you find that you can't get the movie to start playing at all:-

    - on a PC or laptop, check that your Internet connection is operating normally and that you have the latest version of Microsoft Silverlight downloaded.

    - on a Smart TV or Blu-ray player, check that your devices have your manufacturer's latest software version installed (refer to your manufacturer's website for more details) and that your Internet connection is working normally by playing some of the trailers on our site.

If you've tried all this but you still have the problem, please Contact Us with details of your device, the software installed on your device and the movie you're trying to play so we can look into it.

  • I've tried to download a movie with no success?  How can I fix this?
Rented movies are available to view for up to 24 hours (or in some cases 48 hours – depending on the movie) on up to 4 registered devices, 1 device at a time, after you first start to play the movie. You have 30 days to play rented movies before they expire.
